Assignment 7

According to the United States Energy Information Association, Americans use 378 million gallons of gasoline per day, which is equal to 9,034,000 barrels of oil per day.

According to the United States Geological Survey, "between 3 and 10.4 billion barrels are estimated" to be available and recoverable in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

At best, this would only provide enough gasoline to sustain current consumption rates for roughly three years.

Assignment 6

The date of the end of the world, December 21, 2012, according to the Mayan calendar, is also the date that is being associated with another doomsday prophecy - the date that the rough Planet X, also known as Nibiru, will pass close to the earth, disturbing the planet's orbit and cause massive upheaval, catastrophe, and loss of life.

These two legends, entirely separate in origin, have only recently been linked together by Nancy Lieder, a self-declared psychic who claims she is channeling aliens.

"The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012." - http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html
